Common questions
How much does Farpane cost?
Farpane is free to download and free to try for 14 days. After that, a one-time unlock lets you keep connecting. There's no subscription, and the trial never charges you automatically. When a trial ends, your hosts and settings stay in the app.
How do I get my purchase back on a new iPhone?
Sign in with the same Apple Account. If Farpane still asks you to unlock, choose Restore Purchases. Family Sharing also works for the unlock.
Why does the Mac's own screen go dark?
With Fill the display on, Farpane asks the Mac for a desktop shaped like your iPhone. Turn the setting off for the host to see the Mac's normal desktop.
The status says Video off
Video needs a strong connection, so Farpane switches to a slower mode if the picture gets too choppy or video can't start. When your connection improves, choose Try Video Again from the session menu.
Why is there no video on a shared Mac?
Video works only for the account logged in at the Mac. If you sign in with a different account, Farpane uses a slower mode on the Mac's normal screen. You may see a login window first, so log in there as usual.
Video is choppy on Wi-Fi at home
On a mesh network, your iPhone can stay connected to a distant access point. Turn Wi-Fi off and on to reconnect to a closer one.
I see a black screen from a Mac
Screen Sharing on the Mac may be stuck. Turn it off and back on in System Settings.
How do I connect when I'm away from home?
Use a Tailscale address, or choose the SSH tunnel route for the host. Video isn't available through an SSH tunnel.
The app says a host key or certificate has changed
Farpane remembers each server's identity and warns you if it changes. If you didn't expect a change, don't connect. If you did, forget the key or certificate in the host's settings.
